My home is special place, beachside Vero (see map), on Orchid Island, where there's always an ocean breeze wafting across 24 miles of the most beautiful beaches in the long string of barrier islands that lie off Florida's Atlantic coast - ocean on one side, inland waterway (the Intracoastal Waterway, or "ICW") on the other. Here in Indian River County (see map), the ICW opens broadly into the Indian River Lagoon and, in addition to fishing among the mangroves for Tarpon, Snook and Bass, we canoe, kayak, waterski and sail. Across the Lagoon is the little City of Vero Beach - our "mainland" - offering everything one could expect from a small city, and considerably more.
Out here on our barrier island - beachside Vero - we live with broad Live Oaks hanging with Spanish Moss, Bay Oaks, Laurel Oaks and Sabal Palm; with multi-colored Hibiscus, wild Orchids, spectacular ocean sunrises and incredibly romantic moonrises. We relax to the lullaby of ocean waves and scents of sea air, Gardenia, Jasmine and Orange blossoms; we scour the broad Atlantic horizon for ships and comb our lovely, lonely sandy beaches, stretching north and south as far as any eye can see, for pieces of Spanish treasure. This is my special place - it can be yours - beautiful beachside Vero, "Where the Tropics begin" - the heart of Florida's "Treasure Coast" - it's where you'll find your own quiet little private "peace" of Paradise.
Our Treasure Coast got its name from the wreck on our shores in 1715 of a Spanish treasure fleet returning to Spain from Cuba. Most of the fleet's passengers and crew survived, but all the ships and all the treasure went straight to the bottom. Since then, there's been many a fortunate Vero beachomber who has stumbled upon lustrous gold Doubloons in the soft white sands of our endless beaches.
But we're not a remote, barren island. We just seem far, far away - both because of our small-town, no-highrise charm and because here, on beachside Vero, strangers greet you with a little wave, a sincere smile, and a warm "Hello".
Beachside Vero is centrally located on Florida's Atlantic coast, easy to reach by plane, boat, car or yacht. We're an easy drive from Palm Beach (PBI), Orlando (MCO) and Melbourne (MLB) airports; private and charter aircraft can use our very own Vero Beach Airport, which in World War II was a training facility for our dauntless dive-bomb pilots (Yes, Douglas, pun intended).
Our superb and popular city-owned marina is a favored rest-stop on the Intracoastal Waterway and is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, beaches, parks and public transportation - and it abuts our 4-acre off-leash dog park! Imagine: all this, and beachside Vero is a mere four or five miles east of US Interstate 95 and Florida Turnpike.
